ReStore Wichita doing good in our community

It’s easy to think that doing good is a simple, straightforward process—you have something to give, and you give it. But sometimes, true generosity requires a bit of curiosity and a lot of collaboration.

Recently, ReStore Wichita received a call from a nonprofit in Derby looking to donate a large number of items. Upon inspection, our ReStore staff discovered a significant amount of clothing, shoes, and blankets. Since ReStore typically does not accept these kinds of donations, the immediate answer would have been to turn them away. Instead, we saw an opportunity to connect with another organization in need.

Knowing the great work done by the United Methodist Open Door and its connection to our own beloved Charlie Eby, we reached out to them. They were thrilled at the prospect of receiving the items, especially the blankets, which they said they are always in short supply of. The only problem? They had no way to pick up the donations.

This is where the power of collaboration truly shined. With a call for volunteers, our amazing core volunteers, Donna and Jerry, answered the “bat signal.” They showed up and helped load three vehicles with donations, which were then delivered to The Klothes Kloset at UMC Open Door. The joy on the faces of the volunteers there was a testament to the impact of this simple act.

This experience reminds us that doing good isn’t just about what you can give; it’s about seeing a need and working with others to meet it. By being curious about where the items could go and collaborating with our community, we were able to turn a potential rejection into a wonderful blessing for another nonprofit.

Thank you to everyone involved, your willingness to help and your collaborative spirit made a real difference.
