From Heading Home to Homeownership

Candice’s story is a powerful testament to persistence, courage, and the belief that change is possible. In 2024, she first learned about Wichita Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership program through a friend. Determined to secure a safe and affordable home for her family, she applied, but her initial application did not meet the program’s qualifications. Instead of giving up, Candice chose to press forward.

She joined Wichita Habitat’s Heading Home program, which supports applicants in strengthening their financial readiness when income or credit challenges stand in the way. With consistent guidance from her budget coach, Candice worked diligently to improve her financial health. Her hard work paid off, and in 2025, she reapplied and was accepted into the Homeownership program.

Candice also took an important step toward her long-term goals by enrolling in the SPERO program at Wichita State University’s W. Frank Barton School of Business. She completed the Entrepreneurial Path, demonstrating impressive focus and determination.

Her progress came despite significant challenges. Mold in her home made studying there nearly impossible, so she often completed coursework, exams, and assignments in libraries, campus buildings, and local cafés with reliable Wi-Fi. Even with these obstacles, Candice remained committed to her education and personal growth.

While balancing two jobs, including one at Chick-fil-A, she continued to move forward. Her leadership, work ethic, and perseverance earned her the Chick-fil-A Remarkable Future Scholarship, which is helping her pursue higher education and her dream of becoming a teacher. The scholarship honors team members who demonstrate academic excellence, integrity, and dedication. These are qualities Candice embodies every day. With this support and her unwavering determination, she is now working toward her teaching degree at WSU.

Candice truly reflects the spirit of Habitat: resilient, committed, and full of promise. It is through the continued support of our community that future homeowners like Candice can build a lasting foundation for their dreams.
