For years, the cycle felt impossible to break. High rent and climbing utility bills consumed Aisha’s paychecks, leaving her with the heavy frustration of pouring hard-earned money into a space that would never truly be hers. The vulnerability of her situation became undeniable when someone broke into her car and shattered the windows. Despite picking up extra shifts, she felt trapped. Her savings simply could not grow, and her lifelong dream of starting a business was constantly stifled by the crushing cost of just surviving.
That weight finally began to lift the moment she was accepted into Wichita Habitat for Humanity’s Homeownership program. It was a crucial step toward purchasing her own home. “I am truly blessed,” she recalls of that life-changing realization. “It is wonderful that I will be able to own a house of my own at my age.”
Today, Aisha is transforming that gratitude into action. Through her sweat equity hours, her perspective on community has fundamentally shifted. Arriving at the construction site at 8 a.m. to see a crowd of volunteers who have shown up specifically to help build her future is an experience she describes as incredibly special.
“I feel so happy and blessed, I don’t know how to explain the feeling,” she shares. “I feel like I am not alone. I have people that care for me and people who are pushing me to achieve what I want. It makes you feel like you belong.”
Balancing construction hours with her job and her family is a demanding challenge. Yet, Aisha draws endless motivation from the vision of her completed house, the joy of learning new skills, and the deep connections she is making. Her advice to families just starting their own Habitat journey is a pure testament to her resilience.
“Don’t give up. I know it is not easy, going to the job site when you have kids and a job,” she urges. “It feels hard because you are doing so much at the beginning, but don’t give up.”

Soon, the physical walls of her Pope Leo Village house will become what she simply calls as her “safe and beautiful place.” With the financial stability of an affordable mortgage, her dreams are no longer on hold. Aisha envisions a future where she can finally launch her business and save money to travel the world, eager to experience new cultures and cuisines.
But before she crosses oceans, she is eagerly anticipating a much quieter milestone. When asked what she is most looking forward to on her first night in her completed home, Aisha smiles.
“To be honest, I am not going to sleep. I will be awake, admiring my new house and thanking God.”
