Unlocking brighter futures with this year’s Home is the Key campaign

Throughout April, ReStore Wichita shoppers can support Habitat for Humanity’s national “Home is the Key” campaign and help unlock opportunities for better futures by purchasing a $1 pinup at the register.

Every day, one in three people across the globe wake up without access to a safe, affordable home. Right here in Kansas, the income required to purchase a median-priced home has surged to $89,000 per year, leaving a massive gap for the median renter who earns just $47,500.

To combat this pressing community challenge, Wichita Habitat for Humanity is proudly launching Home is the Key, Habitat’s annual fundraising and awareness initiative, running throughout the month of April at ReStore Wichita.

The campaign spotlights an undeniable truth: a stable home is the ultimate key to health, equity, and economic resilience for families in Sedgwick County and across the United States.

While Home is the Key is a critical annual effort, this year it takes on even greater significance. It serves as the first major U.S. activation of Let’s Open the Door, a brand-new, global campaign marking Habitat for Humanity’s 50th anniversary. It also marks Wichita Habitat for Humanity’s celebration of 40 years of service.

“As we celebrate Habitat’s 50 years of building alongside families and communities, in addition to the 40th year anniversary of Wichita Habitat for Humanity, we’re inviting the world to be part of something bigger,” says Danielle Johnson, executive director of Wichita Habitat for Humanity. “We cannot simply build our way out of the housing crisis. We need Wichita and Sedgwick County to step up. Shop. Donate. Volunteer. Let’s open the door to brighter futures and help close the housing gap, starting right here at home.”

Throughout the month, Wichita Habitat for Humanity is supporting ReStore Wichita and turning awareness into action. Community members can get involved and support Home is the Key campaign in several ways:

  • Shop and Support at ReStore: Throughout April, locals can support the mission by shopping or donating at ReStore Wichita. While browsing our constantly changing inventory of discounted items, customers can make an immediate impact by adding a $1 Home is the Key pinup to their purchase at the register. • Volunteer: There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer at our construction site or even at the ReStore. Sign up today!

While Wichita Habitat for Humanity focuses our efforts on local families through Home is the Key, Habitat organizations across more than 60 countries are simultaneously pushing the movement forward. Through pop-up door installations in select major cities, on-the-ground builds, and digital storytelling, the organization is sparking global conversations about why home matters.

“Now is the time to get involved,” adds Johnson. “As we cross the threshold into the next decade, we’re focusing on building a world where everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home. If the housing crisis is in your sights, this is the movement shaping what comes next… help us open the door.”

The tenth annual campaign will run from April 1 – 30, 2026. People can support Home is the Key by donating online and supporting ReStore Wichita, located at 601 N. West St. Wichita, KS 67203, or by using #HomeIsTheKey on social media.
