Celebrating the First Year of ReStore eStore!

Exactly one year ago, ReStore Wichita officially soft-launched its eStore, marking a new chapter in how the organization generates funds for Wichita Habitat for Humanity.

While the official launch date was January 10, 2025, the digital storefront actually sprang to life a few weeks early. On December 17, 2024, the ReStore team received their first surprise sale, followed by a second just days later on the 20th. These initial transactions were a genuine shock to the staff. At the time, the team was still deep in the planning phase, from setting up shipping accounts, researching software, and debating whether to utilize eBay or a standalone site.

The eStore wasn’t even linked to the main website yet. However, the early sales proved one thing: the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy was working. Customers were searching for specific items, and the internet was leading them straight to ReStore Wichita.

The road to the eStore involved over a year of collecting inventory. Staff and volunteers stockpiled items that were unique, highly collectible, or simply too niche to sell well on the physical showroom floor.

In the early months of 2025, sales trickled in slowly. As the team refined their processes, they began ramping up social media promotion. With the expertise of Wichita Habitat for Humanity’s marketing and communications manager, Quang, the backend operations were streamlined and the shop’s reach expanded.

Today, the operation runs like a well-oiled machine. ReStore core volunteer Nhuy dedicates time each week to researching and posting items, while floor staff keep their eyes peeled for potential online treasures. This collective effort has paid off: The eStore has added over $13,000 to ReStore sales.

$13,000+ in sales.

While $13,000 is a fraction of the total ReStore revenue, the impact is in the margins. Every item listed online sells for significantly more than it would in the physical store. The goal is to maximize the dollars raise for affordable housing solutions while still offering online shoppers a bargain compared to market rates.

Highlights from the first year include:

  • The Rigid Compact Press Tool Kit: This item sole for $1,150 in January 2025. The offer was so compelling that the customer drove all the way from Topeka to pick it up personally.
  • Supermatic Snowboard Bindings: On the sales floor, these might have sat for months priced at $15 or $20. Online, the team sold through seven pairs in less than two weeks at $225 plus shipping. (Market value at the time was nearly $400).
  • Vintage Collectibles: The team moved a significant volume of Harley Davidson air filters and discovered just how passionate customers are about vintage Corning and Pyrex glassware.

Those working behind the scenes of the eStore have learned that researching items is an adventure in itself. Over the past year, the team has established three golden rules for online success:

  1. Google Lens is essential: It is the quickest way to identify obscure items.
  2. Check the “Sold” prices: Anyone can ask for a high price, but the true value of an item is determined by what customers have actually paid for similar listings.
  3. Expect the unexpected: The staff is constantly surprised by the unique items that ended up in their hands and the value they hold for collectors.

As ReStore Wichita moves further into 2026, the team looks forward to making the eStore an even more profitable slice of the pie, keeping their eyes peeled for the next treasure to help build homes, communities, and hope.
