Building on national momentum: Why our Legislative Build matters

The recent bipartisan passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act is a huge victory for many communities across the nation. Designed to increase the housing supply and bring down costs, this landmark bill proves that safe, affordable housing is a priority that bridges political divides. However, national legislation is only the beginning. To truly transform our neighborhoods, we must bring this momentum from Congress directly to the local and state levels.

That is exactly what Wichita Habitat for Humanity is doing with our annual Legislative Build. Taking place at the end of August, this event turns national policy into local reality by bringing decision-makers directly to the construction site. Invitations have been sent out to leaders from the City Council, the State Capitol, the School District, the Kansas Department of Commerce, and the Kansas Housing Resource Corporation, along with passionate housing advocates.

“The Legislative Build continues to be an incredibly important aspect of our work at Wichita Habitat,” Quang Nguyen, marketing and communications manager, said in a statement. “It is crucial for our legislative leaders to come out and see the tangible impact Wichita Habitat is making in the community firsthand. Experiencing that impact is what results in transformative legislation like the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. It reminds us that we can find ways to be actionable and move things forward for our families.”

The passage of this new affordability bill is a massive step, but it is not the end of our journey. Rather, it is a foundation. We are continuing to build upon the vital work that housing advocates are championing across the world. Every nail driven and every wall raised by our volunteers and leaders brings us closer to Habitat’s ultimate vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
