Building a Beloved Community: Two families, forever neighbors
The concept of a Beloved Community is not just an ideal. It is a tangible reality built piece by piece, hand by hand, and heart by heart. This vision for Wichita Habitat for Humanity has come full circle as two new homes rise side by side. These houses represent more than just affordable shelter. They stand as a testament to collective action and the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The journey for these two homes began with an incredible display of unity. In January 2026, hundreds of community members gathered inside Century II to construct the frames for both houses. This massive MLK Day of Service Build event set the foundation for what would become months of dedicated, hands-on effort. Over the course of several months, numerous volunteer groups came out to the build sites. They raised trusses, painted the homes, and worked tirelessly to transform raw lumber into welcoming spaces. Along the way, they did more than just construct buildings… they actively built community.

One of these two homes holds a special designation, proudly supported by the Service for Change initiative. Launched in 2024, many restaurant owners in our community came together to establish Service for Change. It was a platform that harnessed collective strength and tackled a large, collective goal. By focusing their energy and resources on supporting Wichita Habitat for Humanity, the initiative demonstrated how a shared purpose can create lasting change. Their support turned a blueprint into a beacon of hope and generational stability for a future homeowner.
Dr. King envisioned a Beloved Community where poverty and homelessness would not be tolerated. He believed in a society driven by love, justice, and shared responsibility. By bringing diverse groups of volunteers together to build these two homes, Wichita Habitat for Humanity and our partners actively worked to make that dream a reality. The effort poured into every nail and every coat of paint reflects a deep commitment to uplifting our community.

Recently, the two separate families received the keys to these houses, purchasing the homes at an affordable mortgage. The families have moved in, decorated their living rooms, and begun a new chapter of homeownership. Most beautifully, the two families have started this journey side by side as forever neighbors. Through the hard work of volunteers and the visionary support of groups like Service for Change, we have come full circle. We have proved that when we work together, lasting change is possible, and a Beloved Community is built right here at home.
