Wichita Habitat for Humanity announces changes to MLK Day of Service in 2025

WICHITA, KS (December 19, 2024)— Wichita Habitat for Humanity announces a shift in the approach to its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Build in 2025.

Traditionally, the organization hosted a large-scale building event with hundreds of volunteers at Century II on MLK Day, focusing on constructing frames for future homes. This year, however, Wichita Habitat will be directing its efforts towards its impactful “Rock the Block Piatt” initiative.

“While we won’t be building walls at Century II this year, we are excited to focus our MLK Day spirit on a different kind of service opportunity,” says Christine Moser, community outreach manager at Wichita Habitat for Humanity. “Dr. King’s legacy of service and community building is at the heart of everything we do. With the Rock the Block Piatt initiative, we have the chance to revitalize 16 homes on the 2600 block of Piatt Avenue in northeast Wichita, creating a lasting positive impact on multiple families and the surrounding neighborhood.”

This shift allows Wichita Habitat to concentrate its resources on a larger-scale project that will benefit a greater number of individuals and families in need of safe, affordable housing. However, the organization recognizes the importance of giving back on MLK Day.

“We encourage everyone to continue honoring Dr. King’s legacy by participating in other MLK Day events throughout the city,” Moser adds. “Let’s come together as a community and embody the spirit of service.”

Stay tuned! In early 2025, Wichita Habitat for Humanity will announce volunteer opportunities for the Rock the Block Piatt initiative and provide more details on a specific day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Follow Wichita Habitat on social media (@WichitaHabitat) or visit its website (wichitahabitat.org) for updates.

Together, let’s celebrate Dr. King’s dream and build a stronger Wichita!
