Wichita Habitat for Humanity is making significant progress in community revitalization with its Rock the Block Piatt initiative. This ambitious project focuses on rehabilitating 16 homes along Piatt Avenue in the Northeast Millair neighborhood, breathing new life into structures that were once part of the public housing system.

“It’s incredibly exciting to see these homes get a fresh start,” shared Danielle Johnson, executive director of Wichita Habitat for Humanity. “Our goal is to bring them back onto the market, providing them much-needed affordable housing options right here in our city.”

While Wichita Habitat for Humanity is known for constructing new homes, the decision to gut and repair existing properties for Rock the Block Piatt expands the capacity to address the pressing need for housing. “We recognize the critical housing crisis affecting so many, and it’s our mission to step in,” Johnson explained. “Being able to offer resources, educational programs, and genuine opportunities for families to secure affordable housing is what drives us.”

The journey to make Rock the Block Piatt a reality has been a year-long endeavor, culminating in the acquisition of these homes through a competitive Affordable Housing Fund RFP process with the City of Wichita. The initiative aims to not only create safe, affordable homes but also to revitalize this segment of northeast Wichita.

Adding to the momentum, KWCH and DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers stepped forward recently with a generous contribution of $1,200, extending a valuable helping hand to support this transformative project.

In addition, Wichita Habitat for Humanity continues to actively seek volunteers and donations to assist with the costs of materials, tools, and other essential resources for Rock the Block Piatt, while expanding further into 67219 with Rock the Block #219, with plans to rehabilitate an additional 13 homes and several new construction opportunities.
