Antique British Navy Cordite Bucket, also known as a Clarkson Case. Royal Crest with N on front indicates it was used by the British Royal Navy. The R/|\L and 4-37 marks on the bottom indicate it was manufactured by the Royal Laboratories in 1937. The "No 73" is thought to indicate size.

Made from cork, canvas and leather it was designed to keep cordite dry on naval vessels. The lid on our piece was added at a later date, but shows similar wear. Originally, cordite buckets would have had a lid of leather or metal to help keep moisture out. Our lid is made of wood and metal. We believe it brings it's own bit of of flair. There is some flaking of the leather on the handle, although the piece is in good condition considering its age and use.

Cordite was a smokeless munitions propellant created to replace gunpowder. It was first produced in 1889 and was used in WW2. It is no longer in use. Cordite gets its name from its brown cord-like shape.
