Can you imagine embarking on a life-changing journey but never leaving the city where you live? No planes. No trains. No ships. That’s the kind of journey people like Desiree take when they partner with us to build an affordable Habitat for Humanity home.
It’s not a fast and easy journey. Desiree knows this for sure. “A lot of days I wanted to give up but I was like, ‘Oh, my goodness, I’m doing this for my son.'” And she pushed on, helping build her neighbors’ homes and then her own as she met the program requirements of earning 250 hours of sweat equity.
The fact that Desiree didn’t have to travel this road alone inspired her. It kept her going. “I really appreciate all the support and love I’ve been getting along this new journey I have started for my family,” she said. One of those supporters was Carol, her budget coach. Carol describes Desiree as “very goal-oriented.” Budget coaches are an important part of Habitat’s program, along with the classes in financial literacy, people are required to complete. This prepares people to be successful homeowners.
“It hasn’t been the easiest thing I have done but definitely the most fulfilling.”
Desiree began building her home in July during Women Build 2019.
A milestone on Desiree’s journey occurred in mid-September when she received the keys to her home. She purchased her affordable home that day on a zero percent, 20-year mortgage. At the dedication ceremony, Desiree stood at the podium and told the crowd that gathered to celebrate with her how much she appreciated them.
“I want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting me.”
I’m sure everyone who has traveled with Desiree on this journey is glad that they had the chance to join her. And, like me, they know this is only the beginning of accomplishments and joys this family will experience.
